It’s easy to misunderstand many aspects of Buddhism when it’s viewed through the lens of the Abrahamic traditions. In my experience, one of the hardest ideas to grasp is the law of karma.

Last week, the FāVS News board voted to name me managing editor, responsible for assigning and editing our news report, and also hiring and training additional staff. I had served on the board for more than two years, but now leave to take this position. The fact board members voted unanimously for my appointment is a singular honor and I am grateful.

Because the fifth Buddhist precept specifically says, “I am determined not to use alcohol or any other intoxicant or to ingest foods or other items that contain toxins …” I chose not to take this precept. I have a sweet tooth. I drink. I watch trash TV sometimes and knew this is a vow I would break from time to time.

The invisible hand operates unencumbered. Earth warms, fueled by greed. The hand ignores environmental and human costs. Earth is not a shareholder.
