This winter, on our first day in Kauai, we needed to take a bus to get our rental car, which was an hour away. Luggages beside us, we waited for the bus to arrive. It was a 30-minute wait, and we got to enjoy some warm weather that contrasted greatly to the -4 weather in Pullman.

I had this sense that I was participating in making the world into a place that was not shaped by Doug, that would continue without him. That I was undoing the evidence of his life. That undoing felt like betrayal. This has been a theme for me in grief and loss, the sense that moving or changing or getting rid of a loved one's possessions is transgressive.

I have observed that, although we are trying to be the champions of equality, diversity and justice, we are doing the opposite. We think we are getting justice, but we are also increasing conflicts and hatred more than ever before. So we start another cycle of inequality and injustice. We must all work together towards justice and not let our emotions, our personal choices and our political agendas come between us but, instead, we must follow social ethics and respect human dignity. 

I value supportive prayer and rejoice like everyone else in Hamlin’s recovery, but I am made a bit uncomfortable by the public displays of Christian piety common on football and other sport fields. What about all the non-Christians among players and fans? Who is not included in the circles of prayer? I am uncomfortable in general with the merging of sports and religion.
