Finding Peace after Tragedy

The killing of four students in off-campus housing in Moscow has been an unthinkable and heartbreaking tragedy. My heart goes out to the family and friends affected directly by this horrific crime. While the story continues to unfold in the news media, I have sought my Heavenly Father in prayer. “Spirit in the Dark,” which opened Nov. 18, is the first special exhibition to focus specifically on religion since the museum opened in 2016. Photos and artifacts are accompanied by quotes of famous African American singers, clergy and writers from the pages of Ebony, Jet and Negro Digest (later known as Black World), all publications of the Johnson Publishing Company that, from its founding in 1942, sought to capture African American culture.

Sacred Texts: Why the Bible Is My Sacred Text

I think it’s pretty obvious I regard the Bible as my sacred text. Every column I’ve submitted on this site is in some way a reflection of my Bible-based worldview. As to what tradition my biblical emphasis represents, that’s another story. There simply isn’t one. At the age of thirty, when I first began to read the Bible seriously, I was drawn toward verses that illuminate Jesus’ disdain for tradition.
