Upcoming lecture at Whitworth to address Islamophobia

National speaker Amer Ahmed will visit Whitworth University on April 19 to deliver a presentation, “Addressing Islamophobia: Dispelling Myths to Break down Barriers.”

According to an announcement from Whitworth, the university is hosting the lecture because, “The post-9/11 era in the U.S. has exposed a significant degree of prejudice and bigotry towards Muslim people.”

“Islamophobia is not just an issue that only impacts Muslims in America,” the statement continued, citing the current presidential campaigns and recent attacks on houses of worship across the country. “There continues to be widespread racial profiling, hate crimes and bullying throughout the country.”

Ahmed is expected to address the beliefs of Islam, talk about the rise of Islamophobia and discuss how to bridge divides.

This event will take place in the Hixson Union Building (HUB) on Whitworth University’s main campus at 7 p.m.
