(RNS) Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate food with gusto.

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, we'd like to know what inspires you to do so.

I’ve always been a religious devotee of Black Friday. Last year, I got up with my sisters and mother-in-law in the middle of the night while the tryptophan and pie residue still flowed in my veins, drove to Starbucks for a carafe of overpriced Americana tradition in a red paper cup and headed to a Seattle mega-mall to raise the balance on my credit card in the name of holiday cheer and goodwill.

While some stores are offering a jumpstart on holiday sales by opening up on Thanksgiving Day, others are vowing to keep their doors shut.

In the days following Thanksgiving, there's already Black Friday and Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday shopping season.
Now, a group of charities and corporate sponsors is urging Americans to make the Tuesday after Thanksgiving just as powerful a day of giving to those in need.
