Event seeks to create a better future for lower Snake River

At a “Spokane Loaves and Fishes,”event on Tuesday night at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist a panel of farmers, commercial fishermen, Northwest tribal members and activists discussed issues concerning the dams and salmon conservation on the Columbia-Snake River Basin.

With the salmon runs being depleted in the Columbia and Snake Rivers due to the dams, habitat loss, rising temperatures and other factors, Julian Matthews and Lucinda “Luci” Simpson, board members of Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment, described the spiritual importance of the salmon and why action must be taken to save them.

Tribal environmental summit to address loss of salmon and its impacts

Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment will be holding its 12th environmental summit at Clearwater River Casino on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., to discuss environmental issues involving the depletion of the salmon population and how it has impacted the orcas, ecosystem and environment.
