In Spokane, churches teeter on a delicate balance of opening their doors wide and locking them tight. One church caters to people who can sometimes be aggressive or hostile. How do they minister to individuals in crisis and keep their own flock safe?

If you were to look at my life from afar, one might call me a seeker. But not in the sense of “I don’t know what I believe” or “Is there even a God?” No – I am a committed Christian, earnestly seeking a life that glorifies the father through the love of Christ with the guidance of the Spirit. Instead, I’m a denominational seeker and a tradition explorer.

Chuckles rose from the congregation as many remembered the words to “Eyes on the Prize,” a 1960s freedom song, which was sung during worship on the seventh Sunday of Easter at Salem Lutheran Church.

Blending traditional hymns, prayers, and Bible readings, Salem Lutheran, which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, holds service Sundays at 10:15 a.m.

It’s Bloomsday weekend, which for downtown churches pretty much means limited parking or canceled services. But some churches are building services around the big event.
