Pope Francis delivered another criticism of some members of his own Church on Thursday, suggesting it is better to be an atheist than one of "many" Catholics who he said lead a hypocritical double life.
In his official statement on the decision Pope Francis maintained that abortion is “a grave sin,” but that “there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father.”
Pope Francis has extended the power to forgive abortion to all Roman Catholic priests. He made the announcement in an ‘apostolic letter’ after the close of the ‘Jubilee Year of Mercy.’
