In a lengthy, wide-ranging interview with journalists from his own Jesuit order, Pope Francis makes a number of stunningly frank comments that are likely to rattle the church and to cement his reputation as a leader more concerned with a pastoral approach than a doctrinal hard line.

Two fireplaces will glow inside Gonzaga University’s new University Center, symbolizing the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola who once said, “Go forth and set the world on fire.”

The $60 million, 167,726 square-foot building, which is set to be completed in Fall 2015, will be an anchor for the university’s Jesuit mission, President Thayne McCulloh said Thursday evening at a groundbreaking ceremony.

For 25 years, St. Louis University has been led by the Rev. Lawrence Biondi. And for nearly two centuries, it has been led by Biondi’s Roman Catholic order, the Jesuits.

Soon, it may be led by neither.

On Feb. 26 the Rev. Frank Case, Gonzaga University’s vice president for mission, will discuss his 18-year service at Jesuit headquarters in a lecture entitled “Reflections on Rome.”

Last week the Rev. Patrick Conroy spoke to Gonzaga University students about his role as the 60th chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Conroy, who graduated from Gonzaga with a master’s degree in philosophy in 1977, is the first Jesuit priest to serve as House chaplain.

On Sunday, Gonzaga University students of faith came together as a student body for an annual tradition of Mass on the grass overlooking Lake Arthur. The homily was declared by the Rev. Janeen Steer, a coordinator in University Ministry.
