We re-awaken from this regular nightmare of guns and shootings and mass death, and as yet, we have not learned anything.

Let’s do the hard thing. Let’s talk about the proliferation of gun violence and how it is possible to thwart it.

Recently in the local news we’ve had a number of articles about guns and the place of firearms in our community.

I went to the opening of the Spokane Symphony 2014-2015 season, and expected to be entranced by beautiful music and fascinating talent. I didn’t think I would encounter Washington Initiative 594, the background check initiative we will vote on in November.

There have been 74 shootings since the Sandy Hook tragedy. That’s on average of one shooting every week.

"Spokane Public Schools could have its own armed police force starting in January," The Spokesman Review reported this week.

As a safety measure, the district is considering having its 13 peace officers carry .40-caliber Glock pistols while on duty.
