Public invited to recreation center groundbreaking at Whitworth

On Sept. 21, the Whitworth University Board of Trustees will officially break ground on the Whitworth Campus Recreation Center, which will be open to Whitworth students, faculty and staff in fall 2013, according to a news release.

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony, which will take place behind Whitworth’s Westminster Hall from 12:30-12:45 p.m.

BRIEF: Professor to present Constitution Day lecture tonight at Gonzaga

Blaine Garvin, professor of political science at Gonzaga University, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. in celebration of both Constitution Day and Gonzaga’s 125th Anniversary Celebration. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Cataldo Hall Globe Room, according to a press release.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Gonzaga as a top university in the West

U.S. News & World Report released its annual college rankings this week, rating Gonzaga University as the fourth best Regional University in the West and the third best value in the West, according to a news release.

Gonzaga ranks No. 2 in the West for both its average freshmen retention rate and average graduation rate.

Author & attorney to discuss popular culture image of lawyers

The Gonzaga University School of Law will kick off the yearlong celebration of its centennial with a lecture by author Scott Turow at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20 in Gonzaga’s Martin Centre.

Turow’s lecture, titled “Where Are You Perry Mason?”,  will explore the popular image of lawyers, the power of attorneys in U.S. society, their perceived dark sides and their ideals as reflected in contemporary culture and media, according to a news release.

Whitworth students safe after Costa Rica earthquake

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake rattled most of Costa Rica at 8:42 a.m. local time Wednesday morning. According to a news release, Whitworth University received confirmation that the students, faculty and staff at Whitworth’s Costa Rica Center are safe and unharmed.

Whitworth has landed once again on Forbes’ annual rankings of the top undergraduate institutions in the United States and is listed as one of the top 10 private schools in the Pacific Northwest.
