As many Indian Americans celebrate the election of the first Black and South Asian woman, Kamala Harris, to the White House, many will also be celebrating the festival of Diwali on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The Spokane India Community will be hosting a Diwali celebration on Dec. 16.

Spokane's Hindu community gathered to celebrate the victory of Dharma Saturday night, with dancing, skits and traditional Indian food.

Dozens of small flames flickered in the darkness outside the Sikh Temple of Spokane Tuesday night, while inside the gurdwara, families prayed, chanted, dined and lit candles together as they celebrated Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights.

In India during this time of year houses, shops and public places are decorated with diyas, or small oil lamps, to symbolize the victory of good over evil.

On Tuesday a Diwali celebration will be held at the Sikh Temple of Spokane, or gudwara.

Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated Hindu holidays, which symbolizes the victory of dharma, and good over evil.
