Spokane's Hindu community celebrate Diwali over the weekend.

On Saturday evening nearly 200 people poured into the top floor of the downtown Comfort Inn to celebrate Diwali, one of the popular Hindu festivals.
Diwali, which means “rows of lighted lamps,” is a time to commemorate the victory of good over evil and the conquest of demon king Narakaasura (Naraka), explained Rahul Sharma, lead event organizer.

Happy Diwali! The local Sikh community recognized the holiday already this week and tomorrow night area Hindus will celebrate with an evening of dancing and cultural food at Comfort Inn in downtown Spokane.

On Tuesday a Diwali celebration will be held at the Sikh Temple of Spokane, or gudwara.

Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated Hindu holidays, which symbolizes the victory of dharma, and good over evil.

In India, Diwali is huge. Gifts are exchanged, businesses close, fireworks pop, homes are decorated, sweets are eaten and, perhaps most importantly, thousands of lamps are lit.
