It’s been six months since I last wrote a religion wrap-up. In that six months, though, I’ve watched our traffic climb higher and higher, so thought I’d give it another go. Spokane is a wellspring of religion news and although we do our best to report it all to you, there’s not enough time in the week to report everything. Here are some bits we thought you might at least want to know about.

Construction began on the historic church in 1925 and the first service was held there in 1929.

New Hope raising money for ministry, building repairs

Spokane’s East Central neighborhood in late July is deceptively quiet. A few people brave the 90-degree heat and scorched sidewalks, but most stay inside with their swamp coolers. At the corner of Greene and Fifth, however, there’s a party going on. The Rev. Percy Happy Watkins and the Tuesday night men’s group are getting their grill on, frying chicken and other barbeque goods in spite of the heat while they catch up on the week’s happenings.

Spokane churches using non traditional locations to reach flock

New Community Church, a 21 year old non-denominational church, sits in the university district. The backyard bumps up against the river, providing a beautiful view for outdoor weddings. In the same building rests the No Li Brewery and Dry Fly Distillery. A great location for a church, according to Pastor Russ Davis.

The location may seem unconventional, but several Spokane churches are finding that non-traditional spaces are the way to go.
