The Ven. Sangye Khadro, a well-known Buddhist nun, teacher and author — along with other monastics from Sravasti Abbey — will give a series of talks on being “Courageous and Kind” to show others how they can mitigate their anxieties.

Although in her book "In Search of Buddha's Daughters: A Modern Journey Down Ancient Roads," Toomey focuses on the role of nuns in various Buddhist traditions, she also offers a useful history of that religion, as well as insight into its teachings.

Why do female Buddhist monastics have so many more rules to follow than the men?

Why are Western women shaving their heads and donning the robes of the Dalai Lama? What is it like to commit to a monastic life? How do women end up making this choice? What can lay people learn from them as they reflect on their own spiritual choices?

Ven. Thubten Chodron, a woman who has been central in in re-establishing the Bhikkhuni lineage, particularly in the West, said she was filled with spiritual questions growing up.

“Why am I here? What’s my purpose?” she wondered.

Sept. 29 marked the 2nd Annual International Bikkhuni Day. Nuns from the Sravasti Abbey, in Newport, were recognized at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane.
