Songs and music, in general, play an important role in the church and Christian life today. Modern technology and contemporary culture have brought new challenges and possibilities to music ministry in the church. Unlike before, you are constantly surrounded by music from TVs and radios, background music on video games, shopping malls, and more. Music as a topic has also been introduced to learning institutions, including most online EdD program available in Washington.

While the church has shown openness to variety and diversity in music, there are certain limitations. Most Christians face a major dilemma of whether they should listen to secular music. Unfortunately, there is no right or wrong answer from the Bible. Secular music is produced for Christians and non-Christians. However, before listening to it, you should debate the following questions:

Does the Music Glorify God?

Christians should ensure that whatever they eat, drink, or do should glorify God. Glorifying God means giving Him praise and honor for who He is. It also mandates Christians to acknowledge and worship God. As a saved Christian, your body is the temple of God, and His spirit dwells in you. You are holy in the sight of God, and whatever is in your mind and body should as well be holy and honor God.

You should evaluate if the music you are listening to honors and respects God. While you won’t be sinning by listening to secular music, your actions, speech, lifestyle, habits, and thoughts are expected to glorify God. This doesn’t mean all secular songs are bad. For instance, you can listen to secular songs that don’t talk about Jesus but glorify God.

Does the Song Draw You Closer to God?

You should also evaluate if the songs draw you closer to God. Christians should live in light of perpetuity and captivated by God. If you found that the song glorifies God from the first question, you should proceed to evaluate if it draws you closer to God. Ideally, you should determine if the song helps you better understand God.

Does the Song Influence Your Attitude?

Most people don’t realize the impact of music, movies, and other media on their attitudes. Music is compelling and easily unlocks the heart and brain through intellectual and emotional aspects. You can act and feel differently by listening to music.

If you’ve answered the first two questions, you should then evaluate the impact of the song on your attitude and behavior. Most artists pass their emotions and feelings through music. This explains why you’d play specific songs if you want to feel certain emotions. Unfortunately, this can lead to anger, depression, anxiety, or violence.

Believers of Jesus Christ should be careful with what they listen to. Listening to certain songs several times can shape your thoughts and beliefs. Even though most fans of secular music claim they listen to the beats and not the lyrics, it isn’t exactly the truth. The human brain is affected by lyrics.

Endnote

While the Bible doesn’t forbid Christians from listening to secular music, Christians should not listen to music that doesn’t glorify and honor God. Good Christians shouldn’t entertain anything that degrades, dishonors, or affects their faith in God. This also applies to movies, games, and videos.
