The Christmas marketing machine is starting to turn. The radio already has Christmas songs playing and the displays are coming out. I thought it would be a good time to remind us what Christmas is all about. Here are two advent poems to get us ready for the surprising coming of God as a babe.
To Burp God
Mary, poor, proud,
and strong, takes her
baby upon her left
shoulder.
Jesus, fed and warm,
feels the pat on the large
of his back. Once,
Twice, then …
From the depths
of his tiny body
delivers a galloping
grunt.
The two laugh
together. Mary comes
face to face with
God, cooing.
The Greatest Story
The birth
of love lays
in a manger. God,
surrounded by manure,
comes
into our manure,
setting us free
by Grace’s compassion.
