Mochi Fest, annual sale of traditional mochi, other desserts & Japanese items at the Spokane Buddhist Temple. Around New Years, many Japanese households will take part in the annual tradition of mochitsuki (餅つき), the pounding of rice to make mochi. Mochi, also called a rice cake, is pounded sweet rice that can be eaten in a sweet or savory dish. We make ours with a mochi machine. Ring Out 2019! Ring In 2020! on our Kansho Bell at this short family-friendly Buddhist service at the Spokane Buddhist Temple. Start your New Year celebrations with this Buddhist cultural observance. The service ends with everyone ringing the Kansho Bell one of 108 times, which symbolically “rings out” the 108 delusions of woman and man and “rings in” our aspiration to overcome ignorance, greed and anger in the coming year.
