The Salish Sea Shared Waters Forum will occur via videoconference Oct. 14 and 15 and is free and open to anyone interested in issues confronting the Salish Sea, a critical shared-boundary region that is home to salmon, shellfish and orcas. The Salish Sea is a vital part of commercial and recreational marine traffic and it is a significant place to Tribes and First Nations.

The forum will be held Oct. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Oct. 15, 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

The virtual forum is sponsored by the Washington State Department of Ecology, B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and the Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force

How Russia’s Crimes Against Humanity Add to History’s Atrocities

Last week, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The court wants to bring Putin to trial but not for massacres of the innocent in occupied portions of Eastern Ukraine. The court does not want to bring Putin to trial for the indiscriminate bombing of civilians or the destruction of energy infrastructure that denies Ukrainians heat and electricity in winter. The International Criminal Court wants to bring Putin to trial for kidnapping children and sending them to Russia to live in orphanages or to be adopted by Russian homes.

The Buddha taught we should show compassion to all sentient beings, not just humans. Initially it reminded me of the biblical commandment, “Thou shalt not kill,” which tended to focus solely on not killing human beings. Buddhism too, says not to murder, but breaks it down further, explaining that protecting human life is only possible by also protecting anything that lives.
