BRIEF: Monk to visit Spokane, present seminar on Buddhism

Bhante Seelawimala, a Theravada Buddhist monk who has been instrumental in establishing several Buddhist Centers in the United States and Canada, will present a seminar Saturday at the Spokane Buddhist Temple.

From 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. he will present, "Buddhism in Your Daily Life" for a suggested donation of $20, or $15 for temple members.

Aki Matsuri Fall Food Festival coming to Spokane

On the books the Aki Matsuri Fall Food Festival has been a tradition for the Spokane Buddhist Temple for 22 years. Long-time members say, however, it goes back even farther — to the 1960s when the church moved from a rented apartment to its current location on Perry Street.

Paul Vielle was raised Catholic, by a Catholic family who assumed he was going to become a Catholic priest. Vielle joined the military and upon his return, he left his Catholic faith and found Buddhism.

“I just couldn’t buy it anymore,” Vielle said.

On July 29 The Rev. Grant Ikuta, bishop of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, will celebrate obon at the Spokane Buddhist Temple.

Obon is is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors.

For more than 20 years members of The Spokane Buddhist Temple have been making Bento Boxes, a traditional Japanese dish, as part of Spokane Japanese Week.
