We, participants in one of the world’s great democracies, were engulfed in chaos, violence and disregard for our sacred foundational principles and values. It is not who we are supposed to be.

Let me be frank: in order to have a society where forgiveness and compassion and pluralism exist, there are basic ground rules that must be agreed upon before this can take place. The first being the rule of law and the second being respect for the democratic process.

In videos shared on Twitter, protesters identified as Proud Boys, the far-right group, marched in the street with a Black Lives Matter banner on fire, cheering and shouting, “F*** anti-fa!” The late-night protests ended with four people stabbed and 23 arrested.

On Nov. 7, when it was announced Joe Biden was President-elect, like most of my friends, I was elated. I was also troubled.

The motto of our country is “Out of Many, One” or in the Latin “E pluribus Unum." The suffering of our time has exposed that we are not one.
