The Force of Habit,” a 17th-century play written in Spanish, will be the Gonzaga University theatre department's next main-stage production and marks the first time the comedy will be performed in English. The play, which features two characters exploring gender roles amid the tension of social customs, opens Feb. 22 in the Magnuson Theatre.
Written by Guillén de Castro, the Gonzaga production was translated and directed by Kathleen Jeffs, Ph.D. “The Force of Habit” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22-23, Feb. 28 and March 1-2 with a matinee at 2 p.m. on March 3. Audience members are invited to attend discussions after each show – with the director, actors, and invited respondents – of issues raised in the play.
“The Force of Habit” is a controversial play about a brother and sister separated at birth and raised in a fashion contrary to the gender norms of society. When reunited, their journey of family expectations and romantic desire leads them to re-evaluate the customs in which they have been raised.
Gonzaga students and faculty are excited to present this timeless show and shed light on a relevant social topic.
