Gonzaga Preparatory School is the recipient of a $220,240 grant from the E. L. Wiegand Foundation (Reno, NV) to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.  The objective of the grant is to fund the E. L. Wiegand Science Lab and the related instructional equipment for the advancement of STEM courses to complement the college-prep science curriculum currently in place.  The grant was awarded on July 5th and Garco Construction has already begun the renovation.  The E. L. Wiegand Science Lab will be ready for use by students by the end of September.

The purpose of the grant is twofold: to fund the construction of a new science laboratory classroom from an existing classroom and to fund the equipment needed to support Gonzaga Prep’s plan to incorporate future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses in the curriculum.  The E. L. Wiegand Science Lab will relieve the burden on the five existing science laboratory classrooms and give Gonzaga Prep the facilities to expand science offerings in STEM fields such as Anatomy and Physiology, a course that will be offered this school year.

In addition to expanding Gonzaga Prep’s facilities, the grant is funding the purchase of science equipment for use by the students.  The equipment purchased will offer students in every course the opportunity to use equipment not typically found in high school laboratories.  Gel Electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting equipment have been purchased for biology classes.  Chemistry classes will have digital probes to conduct accurate and precise experiments, while additional laser, optics, and related sensors have been purchased for Physics classes.  A classroom set of laptops will also support all science classes.

The E. L. Wiegand Foundation embodies the spirit of Edwin L. Wiegand and personifies his devout religious beliefs, adherence to the work ethic, and profound faith in democracy and the free market system.  The Foundation supports projects of exemplary organizations in the fields of education, health and medical research, civic and community affairs, arts and cultural affairs, and public affairs.

Gonzaga Prep is a unique Jesuit, Catholic educational institution that serves the needs of a wide range of students and families in eastern Washington and northern Idaho.  Gonzaga Prep has high expectations for its students and prepares them for college and beyond with a rigorous education.  The grant from the E. L. Wiegand Foundation continues this tradition.
