POLL: Are you going to get ashed on Ash Wednesday?

Next week we'll celebrate Ash Wednesday, which is the practice of putting ashes on the foreheads of penitent believers as a reminder of their physical return to dust (“ashes to ashes”).

On Wednesday many Christians will mark the beginning of the Lenten Season by having ashes placed on their foreheads as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of the shortness of human life. Catholic writer Thomas Merton once said Ash Wednesday, “… is for people who know that it means for their soul to be logged with these icy waters: all of us are such people, if only we can realize it.”

Offering Ashes to Go downtown

Naomi Calkins-Golter, of Rosalia, didn’t have time to go an Ash Wednesday service this morning. She’s a working mom, and her kids had a half-day of school, so when she saw clergy imposing ashes outside Riverpark Square, she was quick to walk over and ask for a blessing.
