BRIEF: Dolan appoints GU psychologist to National Review Board

Fernando Ortiz, Ph.D., director of the Counseling Center at Gonzaga University, has been appointed to the National Review Board by Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Board was established by the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” to collaborate with bishops to prevent sexual abuse of U.S. minors by persons in service of the Church.

How do you feel about billboards constructed by atheists that openly attack faith? I'm in support of any message that encourages people to explore beliefs — or unbeliefs, as the case may be — but not at the sake of attacking what others practice. What are your thoughts?

IRS targets Christian groups, demands content of prayers

Over the last week, Americans learned that the Internal Revenue Service targeted some 500 conservative groups for extra scrutiny, some of which included the words "Tea Party" or "patriots" in their name.  Several reports say that the agency has also targeted some Christian organizations, going so far as to demand the content of members' prayers.

Why no discussion of non-lethal weapons?

Conservatives claim any new gun control regulations are a serious impediment to their ability to defend themselves and their families. Liberals claim guns are destructive to the fabric of society by way of equipping murders with the most efficient tools to kill. Both sides have valid points to make, and the Constitution, for better or worse, guarantees that Americans have certain rights regarding the bearing of arms.

Tolerance has its limits ... as in 9mm’s worth

I believe I am a tolerant person. I am not a gun owner. I am not a hunter. I don’t even eat meat. But I live with three people who eat meat. I tolerate people who eat meat. I understand that some people like to hunt. But I don’t like guns.

Stop celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.

Earlier this month America engaged in its annual ritual of misremembering Martin Luther King, Jr. Although Rev. Dr. King often indicted what he called the “triple evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism,” America chiefly associates King with only one of these ills; our predominant picture of King is as an opponent of racial segregation.

CNN’s Piers Morgan suggests amending the Bible over gay rights

While speaking with Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" on Christmas Eve, host Piers Morgan suggested amending the Bible to fit his liberal worldview on gay rights and same-sex marriage. Newsbusters' Randy Hall said that Morgan referenced a passage "that states adultery is punishable by being stoned to death."
