UPDATE: Clues narrow in search for missing man

The search efforts to find Dr. Jay Sloop, the Upper Columbia Conference Health Ministries director who disappeared Tuesday, are ramping up in Kiev. On Wednesday searcher uncovered possible clues to Sloop’s whereabouts and are searching the area today.

Mormons say they’re OK with change in Scouts’ gay policy

The compromise proposal from the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay youths — while continuing to exclude gay leaders — has picked up a powerful backer: the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon leaders, who sponsor more Scout troops than any other religious or civic group, announced Thursday (April 25) that they are “satisfied” with the BSA’s plan.

Retreat to focus on what happens at Mass

Overlooking the Moran Prairie is the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, an enchanting facility that hosts a number of programs and retreats throughout the year. From March 1-3, Immaculate Heart will be hosting a retreat for men and women about Mass based on (and named after) the Rev. Jeremy Driscoll’s book “What Happens at Mass.” The retreat will detail the true nature and importance of Mass, both traditionally and theologically.

During ordination ceremony, woman commits to monastic life

NEWPORT — Daniela Mieritz touched her palms together, closed her eyes and let shavings of hair fall onto the dark blue towel draped around her neck. About 30 people sat facing her, watching the sacred ceremony. Mieritz never opened her eyes to look at them, though a smile occasionally crept across her face as her teacher, Venerable Thubten Chodron, delicately took a razor to Mieritz’s scalp.

Kosher food pantries report growing need

As the director of a kosher food pantry outside Detroit, Lea Luger knows that some people have a hard time thinking that Jews anywhere in America could be short on food. “For many years, one of our biggest hurdles was convincing Jews and non-Jews that a need existed,” said Luger, executive director of Yad Ezra, which serves 1,400 families a month, up from 250 a month when the pantry was founded in 1990.
