Monday’s Religion News Roundup: Sikh shooting, concubines, Missouri prayer

All eyes are on Wisconsin this morning after a deadly shooting rampage at a Sikh temple that left six people dead, as well as newly identified shooter Wade Michael Page. Sources tell CNN that Page is thought to be a white supremacist, and temple members say they'd never seen him before. Unnamed sources told ABC he's a "skinhead."

U.S. nuns who will gather this week to respond to a Vatican crackdown told the archbishop tasked with reform that he'd do better to stay home, saying his presence in St. Louis would not be "helpful." The Seattle Times profiles the archbishop in question, Peter Sartain.

After shooting, Sikhs push for more legal protections

U.S. Sikhs are taking heart in a widely publicized Senate hearing on hate crimes and a pledge by the Justice Department to consider tracking hate crimes directed at their community. The hearing, on Wednesday (Sept. 19), featured Harpreet Singh Saini,18, whose mother was one of six Sikh worshippers killed Aug. 5 when a gunman opened fire in their Wisconsin temple.

Term “Christian terrorist” points to hypocrisy

Shortly after this summer’s murders at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, Sociology Professor Mark Juergensmeyer wrote a short article in which he reflected on the motivations of the perpetrator, Wade Michael Page. In his article, Juergensmeyer identified Page as a “Christian terrorist.”
