On Wednesday many Christians will mark the beginning of the Lenten Season by having ashes placed on their foreheads as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of the shortness of human life.

Catholic writer Thomas Merton once said Ash Wednesday, “… is for people who know that it means for their soul to be logged with these icy waters: all of us are such people, if only we can realize it.”

Below is a list of area Ash Wednesday services.

Dayton First Congregational Church — UCC: 7 p.m.

Episcopalian Church of the Resurrection: 12 p.m., 7 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church: 7 p.m.

Holy Cross Lutheran: 12 p.m., 7 p.m., light dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center: 8 a.m., 11:45 a.m.

Our Lady of Fatima: 7 p.m.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church: 7 p.m.

Rockford Community UMC: 6 p.m.

St. Aloysius Catholic Church:  12 p.m.

St. David’s Episcopal: 12 p.m., Traditional Rite II service, 7 p.m. Celtic service

St. John’s Lutheran Church: 6:45 p.m.

St. Joseph Parish, Colbert: 8 a.m. Mass, 6:30 p.m. Rosary, 7 p.m. Mass

St. Marks Lutheran: 7 p.m.
