This church is a fine example of the Gothic Revival architectural style, which is primarily used in Christian religious structures. Formerly called Emmnauel Lutheran Church - was built in 1959 and designed by the prominent architectural firm of Whithouse and Price. The church replaced the Oscar Labaree House, a Colonial Revival mansion with 2 1/2 stories and a wrap-around porch at the southeast corner.

In 1978 it was known as the St. Matthew Institutional Baptist Church until 2006
