St. John’s to host cello recital Sunday

On Sunday,  at 4p.m., the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Second Sunday Recitals will feature cellist Douglas Starkebaum, a senior at Gonzaga University.  He is a member of the Gonzaga University Symphony as well as the chamber quartet and is studying Cello Performance with Gonzaga professor, Dr. Kevin Hekmatpanah, who regularly performs in St. John’s Second Sunday series.

Aristotle and the Amish

Breaking Amish premiered on TLC on Sept. 9. It follows four Amish and one Mennonite as they venture out into the world of the English (non-Amish). In Amish culture, teenagers are allowed to participate in a rumspringa, a period of time before their baptism as a full member of the Amish in which they explore the outside world.

Around the same time the YouTube trailer sparked violence in parts of the Muslim world, Harvard Professor Karen King disclosed an ancient papyrus in which Jesus supposedly said “My wife …” Christians believe Jesus was never married and the insinuation that it might be otherwise could have seemed sacrilegious to a vast number of Christians.

Festival of Arts in West Central opens Friday

The Festival of Arts in West Central, hosted by Salem Lutheran Church, opens Friday at The Book Parlor with hors d'oeuvres, a live auction (benefiting The Book Parlor), live music and a gallery viewing. Tickets for opening night are $5 at the door.

Brief: Organ recital to be held at St. John’s this Sunday

Janet Satre Ahrend, who serves on the music department at Gonzaga University, will perform "Fire, Tenderness, Laughter and Majesty: The Unexpected Voices of the Organ" Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. During the recital she'll play pieces from Buxtehude and Bach, Elgar, Sir William Walton and Canadian organist, Denis Bédard on the church's Aeolian Skinner organ.
