15 Spokane area faith leaders appear on billboards supporting Referendum 74

On Monday the first of three 10’ X 30’ billboards was placed at 2nd and Stevens streets in favor of same-sex marriage. The billboard states in bold rainbow colored letters that, “People of Faith Support Freedom to Marry,” and contains a group photograph of 15 Spokane area ministers, clergy, and other faith leaders encouraging those who see it to “Vote Yes” on Referendum 74.

Christian author goes undercover to understand homosexuality

Timothy Kurek used to think being gay was the ultimate sin. Raised in Tennessee, he attended a Southern Baptist church, was home schooled most of his childhood and went to a private Christian school where his fellow church members were teachers or administrators. International human rights attorney to Speak at GU Law School

Eric Sirotkin, an international human rights attorney who works with the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in South Africa and Korea and producer of “Committing Poetry in Times of War” , will present two lectures at Gonzaga University School of Law on Oct. 22.  The film he produced and co-wrote chronicles a high school humanities teacher in New Mexico who was fired for letting his poetry team students express their opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Ranks of religiously unaffiliated rises to 1 in 5 Americans

While the Pew poll on the presidential election is getting most of the recent headlines, there is another Pew poll that came out this week on religion in American that is more significant. According to the Pew Research Center, one in five American adults — nearly 20 percent of the US population — now describe themselves as religiously unaffiliated, the highest percentage ever in Pew’s polling.

Clergy, lay people counter Santorum visit with Rally for Love demonstration

Member’s of Spokane’s progressive faith community gathered outside Double Tree Hotel on Tuesday to show their support for Referendum 74, while Rick Santorum spoke against gay marriage at a ticketed lunch inside. About 15 clergy and 40 lay people came together to demonstrate, through Rally For Love, that not all people of faith agree with Santorum’s views on family and marriage.
