VIEWPOINTS: Soon marijuana will be legal in Washington. Does that change your opinion about it being moral or immoral?

Almost 56 percent of Washington voters said yes to legalizing marijuana, and on Dec. 6 it will be legal to posses it here (you can find explanations on the new law from the Seattle Police Department here).

Last year Gallup released a poll showing 50 percent of Americans were in favor of legalizing Cannabis — a record high.

According to its website:

When Gallup first asked about legalizing marijuana, in 1969, 12% of Americans favored it, while 84% were opposed. Support remained in the mid-20s in Gallup measures from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, but has crept up since, passing 30% in 2000 and 40% in 2009 before reaching the 50% level in this year's Oct. 6-9 annual Crime survey.

Seems marijuana has become more socially acceptable. We asked our writers if they had any moral issues with its legalization.

Soon marijuana will be legalized in Washington. Does that change your opinion about it being moral or immoral?

Judging others is immoral

The only truly immoral action I can take is to judge another person. Each of us is living on a continuum between birth and death on the physical plain and between ignorance and enlightenment on the spiritual plain.

Marijuana is not immoral

No, the legalization of marijuana doesn't change my opinion regarding the morality of marijuana use. I was never of the belief that marijuana use was immoral.

Drugs aren’t immoral, the purpose for which they are produced can be

No, the measure legalizing pot smoking does not change my mind about the morality of either Cannabis Sativa or its use. I don’t think any drugs are in and of themselves moral or immoral, but the purposes for which they are produced tell a different story.
