VIEWPOINTS: Is it OK to try to contact the dead?

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said in her memoir “My Beloved World” that her grandmother used to conduct séances and wanted her to become a mystic. She told Time magazine in the Feb. 11 issue that she has no regrets that her mother ruled out such a career option.

God forbids necromancy

The Christian bible forbids necromancy, astrology and various forms of occult divination as practices that cultivate trust in dark and adversarial powers.

Isaiah 8:19-20 read:
"And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."

Everyone is curious and sometimes fearful about the future, and most inherently know that there are probably dimensions outside our ability to regularly contact.

The Bible reveals that there are evil powers at work in some of those realms that seek to contact, influence and even control humans. Part of the ministry of Jesus on Earth revolved around disassociating and untangling those possessions and teaching people how to live free from spirit appeasement and fear.

Placing the unknown future into the hands of a self-revealed, sovereign God is part of biblical faith and healthy spirituality. Disciples of Jesus learn to trust God with tomorrow, our loved ones who have died and the temptation to know more than is wise.

Today with its test, trials, temptations, opportunities and joys is the primary boundary of kingdom living. The eternals are the realm and concern of God.

No, it’s not OK to contact the dead

God's word is clear that we are not to engage in "necromancy."

I would never tell someone they couldn’t try to contact the dead

I have always found restrictive all the “rules” that are imposed by different religions. It would be interesting to combine all of the rules of all of the religions and see what action the individual is able to make on their own.

When one dies, a connection can remain

I tend to think most people who hold seances and channel famous people are quacks. However, I believe that there is much that we do not (yet) understand about our body — soul connection.

  1. Well this is going to put a damper on my plans to join Evil Necromancer school!

  2. So I suppose Hogwarts is out of the question too?
