I'm in marriage limbo right now and am on the fast track toward divorce. This is not something I wanted and have made multiple efforts to work things out with my ex-spouse to no avail. What do I do now in a spiritual sense?

Back when I was a stage manager, I had several stretches of unemployment and underemployment — times when my day planner was pristine and blank no matter how many pages I turned. Those times sucked.

I was a friend of “Dave,” the man whose suicide you wrote about two weeks ago. According to the authority of the Bible, does his suicide determine his destination in the afterlife? In other words, is he in hell? It is a VERY hard question to ask, but if his premeditated murder of himself purchased hell, others need to know about it in order to save their own souls.

I'm stuck. I'm in a loveless marriage. We get along OK, as friends. But we haven't had sex in ages. I've cheated. I want out, I'm pretty sure she wants out. But we have young kids, which is a factor.

I have just received the awful news of the suicide of a young person.
An untimely death is always terrible. A sudden death is always shocking. But a suicide somehow magnifies both those things.

Over the last 15 years, a lot of folks have changed their minds about what kind of rights, privileges and respect we ought to extend to our GLBTQ neighbors. For many, the exhibit which won the trial in equality’s favor was the one that demonstrated that sexual orientation is determined before we leave the womb.

When a person dies intestate (which, even though it sure sounds like a groin injury, actually means not having a will), the state ends up following a rigid set of rules to determine what happens to her money and her property. Those rules will not necessarily send her assets where she would like them. If, for instance, it’s important to you to make a gift to your worshipping community, to a charity, or to an obscure relative or friend, dying intestate means that the state is not going to follow your wishes.

Taking care of another person is a big deal. To say “yes” to this vocation — whether that means parenting a child, caring for a partner or for a friend during a time of illness, or walking with a mother in her old age — is to give a huge gift, both to the person receiving your care and to the wider community. I am grateful that you and your husband have chosen to make this gift of love and of service.
