BRIEF: Upcoming interfaith panel to examine death penalty

An interfaith panel slated for June 5 will explore why the death penalty should be repealed in Washington. "Honoring Life: A Compassionate Discussion on the Death Penalty" will include five speakers from different faiths, who will discuss why they believe capital punishment is unacceptable for a compassionate, civilized people, according to event organizer Victoria Thorpe.

What’s so “super” about the Super Mitzvah (or Golden Rule)?

Although the Mitzvah (commandment) “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18) that appears in the scriptural portion that was read in all synagogues worldwide this last Saturday (April 20) is but one among 613 religious obligations that are noted in the Torah, it has been dubbed “The Golden Rule” or the “Super Mitzvah.”

A Catholic commentary on the writing of the Torah: Part I

The first five books of the Hebrew Bible are often known as “Torah,” which means “The Law.” This title indicates the shared Jewish and Christian tradition that Genesis through Deuteronomy represents a cohesive divine revelation to ancient Israel in the Sinai desert following the Exodus event and giving of the covenant. Most Bible scholars agree that the Torah resembles legal codes and treaties found among neighboring ancient Near Eastern cultures and have documented correlations between Torah and legal codes of the Babylonian, Assyrian and Hittite Empires.

Judaic scholar Andrea Lieber concluded her visit to Gonzaga University Monday evening by discussing the intersection of feminism and Judaism and examining ways the faith is evolving when it comes to gender roles, as well as ways it continues to grapple with traditional customs. Lieber is a professor of religious studies at Dickinson College and author of “The Essential Guide to Jewish Prayer and Practices.”

BRIEF: Scholar to lecture on Holocaust, feminine space in Judaism

Andrea Lieber, associate professor of religious studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., will lecture and lead a discussion in two events at Gonzaga University on Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins the evening of April 7 and ends the evening of April 8. Lieber will speak on and invite discussion on the topic, “What Does the Holocaust Mean to You?” — starting at 5:30 p.m., April 7 in the Foley Center Library, Teleconference Room.
