Martin Elfert

The Rev. Martin Elfert is an immigrant to the Christian faith. After the birth of his first child, he began to wonder about the ways in which God was at work in his life and in the world. In response to this wondering, he joined Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he and his new son were baptized at the Easter Vigil in 2005 and where the community encouraged him to seek ordination. Martin served on the staff of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, Wash. from 2011-2015. He is now the rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland, Oreg.

Father Knows Best: I hate when my girlfriend goes clubbing

The neurologist and author Oliver Sacks tells the story of a patient who is haunted by a nightmare. This patient is afraid to go to sleep because, every time that she does, a monster chases her.

Father Knows Best: I’m not sure I can still support World Vision

First — and forgive me if this is obvious, PE, but it’s where I would start if I were in your situation — is there another not-for-profit doing similar work that has a better record on gay rights?

Father Knows Best: Do you pray?

Anne Lamott argues that there are three “essential prayers”: Help, Thanks, and Wow. Let’s use her categories as a guide for our conversation.

Father Knows Best: So many bad things are happening. Where has God gone?

I'm so troubled by all that is happening in our world. The forest fires this summer, the airplanes being lost or shot down, the fighting in Gaza. Where has God gone?
