IRS targets Christian groups, demands content of prayers

Over the last week, Americans learned that the Internal Revenue Service targeted some 500 conservative groups for extra scrutiny, some of which included the words "Tea Party" or "patriots" in their name.  Several reports say that the agency has also targeted some Christian organizations, going so far as to demand the content of members' prayers.

Westboro Baptist thanks God for Boston Marathon bombings, promises to protest funerals

While the nation mourns the loss of life in Monday's horrific bombings in Boston, the Westboro Baptist Church is celebrating in its usual fashion, saying the explosions were sent by God as punishment for gay marriage. “Thank God for the Boston marathon bombs,” the church said on Twitter, the Washington Times reported.

Easter sermon includes political attack on conservatives, religious right

One normally does not expect to hear a political attack during a sermon on Easter Sunday, but that's exactly what the congregation of St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., received this weekend. "The captains of the religious right are always calling us back, back, back. For blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants  to be on their side of the border," Rev. Dr. Luis Leon said.

Devout Mormon suspended from college class for refusing to ‘stomp on Jesus’

Ryan Rotela, a devout Mormon attending Florida Atlantic University at Davie, Fla., was suspended from his intercultural communications class for refusing to stomp on a piece of paper with the name "Jesus" written on it, CBS affiliate WPEC reported Thursday. According to WPEC, the class was conducting an exercise that was spelled out in the textbook, “Intercultural Communication: A Contextual Approach, 5th Edition.”

Vatican slams media for ‘false’ reporting about pope’s resignation

On Saturday, one day before Pope Benedict XVI's final blessing in St. Peter's Square, the Vatican lashed out at the media over what it called defamatory and false reports it says are an attempt to influence the election of the pope's successor, according to the Associated Press. "Italian newspapers have been rife with unsourced reports in recent days about the contents of a secret dossier prepared for the pope by three cardinals who investigated the origins of the 2012 scandal over leaked Vatican documents," the AP reported.

Arkansas governor signs law allowing concealed guns in churches

On Monday, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, a Democrat, signed the so-called "Guns in Church" bill into law, allowing those with concealed-carry permits to bring their guns into churches.

Pope Benedict XVI announces retirement, Twitter explodes with hate, death wishes

On Monday Pope Benedict XVI announced that he would retire at the end of February, citing his advanced age and failing strength. As soon as the announcement was made, the social media site Twitter exploded with hateful, often profane messages, many of them calling for the aging pontiff's death.

Tennessee Christian quits job over W-2 form bearing ‘666’

Walter Slonopas, a 52-year-old maintenance worker from Clarksville, Tenn., quit his job with Contech Casting LLC last week when he received a W-2 form bearing the number "666," the Biblical mark of the beast mentioned in Revelation, the Tennessean reported Thursday. "Slonopas said that after getting the W-2, he could either go to work or go to hell," the Tennessean reported.

Americans blame bad parenting, Hollywood for mass shootings over guns

Despite the best efforts of some in the so-called "mainstream media," a surprising new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll published this week says that more Americans blame bad parenting and Hollywood for mass shootings than they do guns. Guns actually came in fifth place, behind parenting, effective treatment for mental health, media coverage of mass shootings and violence in movies and video games.

MSNBC host, atheists demand Obama drop God, Bible from inauguration

It seems that some liberals — notably the Freedom from Religion Foundation and MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell — are upset that the swearing-in ceremony for the president of the United States includes references to religion and the use of a Bible.
